therapy dog training classes los angeles

therapy dog training classes los angeles ๏ปฟHave you ever seen men getting “attacked” by a police or military dog as part of the dog’s training? The men (I’ve never seen a woman, but I’d like to think there are some strong, feisty women who suit up for this role) wear either just a big padded thing on one of their arms, or they’re engulfed entirely in a padded suit.

The dog lunges for the padded arm, and the “victim” can’t do squat while this occurs.

So from the man’s point of view, what is this all like? According to an article on indefinitelywild.gizmodo.com, a 125-pound Military Working dog named Fritz “attacked” the author who was wearing a “heavily padded safety suit” that included a “rubber prosthetic arm.”

He was instructed to hold out his arm while Fritz sat obediently. The dog was given orders by a handler to clamp onto the author’s arm. The 150-pound author had no control over his body being thrashed about. The goal is to prevent the dog from biting up and down the arm, which the author was not able to do.

The dog instantly released his “victim” upon hearing commands. The author was then told to “say something mean to the dog and then run away” to “provoke him.” So the author said “Profane-you Fritz!” and bolted.

Fritz bolted after him “at full speed, in anger.” Now let me interject here. I question that the dog was angry. A human might be if you said something mean, but not a dog. I’m no dog expert, although Ive had 2 German Shepherds in the past 2 years, but it’s fair to suppose that the combination of tone in the author’s voice, and his sudden sprinting away, kicked up Fritz’s instinct to charge after prey. This is why dogs run after a tossed ball.

The author was brought to the ground in an instant. Fritz remained clamped onto him as the handlers escorted him and the dog towards some spectators. Fritz was rewarded with just a pat on the head (but hey, maybe to a dog, that’s serious stuff).

I’ve always wondered what this is like from the dog’s point of view. If the dog was truly in attack, shred-him-up mode, wouldn’t he go for the face instead of clinging on to just a padded arm that tastes like rubber and not live flesh? When people are attacked by dogs while jogging, walking or inside their homes, almost always, they receive injuries (sometimes very serious) to the face and scalp, even neck. Such dogs will also often tear out chunks of the victim’s legs.

But police or military dogs in training always go after that big rubber arm—and stay with it. To a degree, the dogs think it’s just a game, especially since sometimes, the “victim” is the dog’s own handler—who in the next scene is lovingly interacting with the animal.

Anyway, most dogs are a great layer for home protection no matter their size or abilities. Clearly some dogs aren’t, but, if it is remotely territorial it can act as an additional set of eyes and ears. And if the dog barks upon hearing an intruder, it can act as a layer added to an alarm system.

cheap dog training classes chicago

cheap dog training classes chicago ๏ปฟHaving your dog attacked by a wild animal is a frightening experience. When two animals are engaged in a fight, it can be difficult to separate them without sustaining injuries yourself.

Depending where you live, coyotes, bobcats, bears, foxes, alligators and mountain lions are the animals that most people are concerned will attack their pets. Otters, although usually shy, non-aggressive animals, have increasingly been involved in attacks on both humans and dogs. Some of the otter attacks on dogs have been fatal. In some cases it has been thought the otter was a mother trying to protect her litter, or in other attacks the otter was rabid.

North American river otters can be found throughout the United State and Canada. Otters mainly east fish, but also eat frogs, snakes, crustaceans, and sometimes small mammals, water birds such as ducks, geese and even herons. Otters are aquatic members of the weasel family, and can look a lot like a large wet cat when they emerge from the water. Otters are usually 3 to 4 feet long and weigh up to 25 pounds. They have webbed toes, short legs and a small, flat head. In Florida, otters are usually found close by to fresh water, living in burrows, on water banks, or under the roots of trees. Otters are protected under Florida law, but can be killed if they destroy property.

In Boca Raton, Florida a woman walking her Labrador retriever and fox terrier experienced an otter attack first hand. The woman saw four otters in the water and kept walking with her two dogs. One of the otters came out of the water and viciously attacked her Lab, pulling the dog into the water. The Boca Raton resident jumped into the water to rescue her dog. The terrier also went in the water and the otter released the Lab and went after the small dog. The woman resorted to punching the otter until it released her terrier and swam away. Luckily both dogs and their owner survived the attack without serious injuries.

In 2001, an otter attack in New Port Richey, Florida resulted in the death of a 5-year-old Alaskan Malamute.

Two teenage girls watched as their dog, Mike was ferociously attacked by the otter in the backyard of their New Port Richey home. At first the girls thought the otter was just playing with their beloved pet, when suddenly the 4-foot-long otter grabbed Mike's snout with his teeth and began to drag the fluffy, white dog into the lake. As the girls screamed for help, a family friend grabbed a pole, jumped into a small boat and tried to rescue Mike. The dog was already limp and floating away. The otter showed no fear of the rescue attempt, jumped into the boat and began attacking the friend's foot. The girls stood in the backyard, hysterical as their friend kicked and jabbed the otter with a pole. The otter jumped off of the boat, swam over to Mike, grabbed the dog and glided off. The body of the dog was found on the shore of the lake a day after the attack.

dog owners should consider the possibility of attacks by wild animals on their pets and take preventative measures. dogs should never be left outside unsupervised. Even in fenced yards, wild animals have been known to gain access and attack pets. If your dog must be left outside, consider purchasing or building an outdoor 6-sided enclosure that is made of a heavy gauge chain-link. Remove food sources from your yard, such as fallen fruit or food refuse. Do not leave pet food outside unnecessarily.

Always walk your dog on a leash. When walking your dog in areas where a wildlife attack may occur, get in the habit of carrying something with you to scare wildlife, such as, a walking stick, air horn, or umbrella, as well as something to throw such as baseballs or golf balls. If you notice a wild animal such as a coyote, or an otter, keep your dog as close to you as possible and move towards an active area. Never encourage your dog to interact or play with a wild animal. If your dog is attacked by an animal, avoid the desire to jump between the animals and pull them apart. This usually results in serious injury and the possibility of going through rabies shots. Consult your veterinarian, or dog trainer for other suggestions on how to deal with animal attacks.

dog training classes burnsville mn

dog training classes burnsville mn ๏ปฟThe most popular training problem is dog aggression. More than 4.3 million people every year are bitten by dogs. That is about 2 percent of the population of the United States. Not a small number.

The most common reason people dismiss this behavior is that "the dog is an animal" and it is going to behave as such. It has natural instincts. It is always no matter what behavior it is engaged in, good or bad, playing to those instincts. Now the good thing about dogs, the reason that they are so loved as pets is because they have been bred to be domesticated animals. So that means that one of the dog's instincts is to try to please.

So along with this being a symptom of a dog being a dog there is also the fact that dogs have an instinct towards a pack society. Now what this means is that there is a hierarchy of respect that a dog will give other dogs and/or humans according to how the dog perceives you in the hierarchy.

So to make it more clear, if you are clearly an authority figure to that dog it is much less likely to engage in some of the behaviors that we do not appreciate such as dog aggression or the dog biting you. The reason for that is that if you are seen as the authority figure, the alpha of the pack, then your dog would not dare play in a certain manner.

So for example, let's say there are two members of your household; one has trained the dog from the beginning. There is a certain bond to their relationship with the dog. Many people now mistake this and say well, the dog loves me but hates my husband, that is why he bites him. But that is not really accurate. It is somewhat of an oversimplification.

It is not so much about love, instead it is how the dog perceives you versus your husband. Say you have trained the dog from the day you brought it home from the breeder, pet store, shelter, or pound, and you have been constant with this dog. You are the one giving it treats. You are the one responding to its behavior. And let's say your husband or boyfriend or significant other, whoever it may be, even a friend, encounters the dog and the dog jumps up on the friend or the dog bites the friend. This is someone that the dog just does not perceive as being higher than it in the social standing of your little household pack. So in that case the dog feels more freedom to do certain things.

A perfect example would be let's say at work you may say you act a certain way with your coworkers who are in the same job as you with the same title or even with someone of a lower job title in your company where you work than you would with your boss or the head of the company. You are going to be much more guarded with your boss, much more careful about everything you do than you would be with the buddy that is in the next office or next cubicle or the next desk. The same is true with your dog.

So, I am sure you are starting to see a pattern. The key to making your dog less aggressive is to increase your standing in the pack with proper dog training. Being authoritative is required. Crate train your dog if you haven't yet. The uninformed see that as cruel. However, dogs are den animals. They enjoy having a space of their own. Lets put it this way-remember your first apartment. You didn't care how small it was because it was "all yours". Your dog is no different. If you take those steps you should able to make strides in having a much less aggressive dog.

ways to train your dog off leash sacramento public library

ways to train your dog off leash sacramento public library ๏ปฟThe Joys Of Coton De Tulears??

Most of you will probably be asking yourselves - what on earth is a Coton de Tulear? You would be right to ask! It is a very small dog! History lesson coming up!

Arriving in Madagascar - these little dogs appeared from over the seas on the ships where presumably they hunted the rats - who knows really? There are many stories about them, but suffice it to say that they were beloved of the royal family and no-one else was allowed to have them.

Possibly because they were carry size, lap size and very pretty - mainly being pure white, long haired and extremely pretty!

One story which always amused me was that the dogs - which used to roam in packs - not terriers I hasten to add - came across a broad river which they could not cross, there being no bridge and the water full of crocodiles. Very clever these little dogs - so they started barking (which believe you me they are extremely good at - and loud!) and running up and down the bank until the crocodiles started to follow them.

The main body of the pack then appeared at the edge of the water and rushed across on the backs of the crocodiles to the other side! The crocodiles being stunned by this made no effort to stop the few who had been barking at them also running over their backs!!

True or not - a lovely story to have a little dog outwit a large, ferocious crocodile!!

Back to mine - yes, I have two of them!

Another story, but this time it is absolutely true as to how I got my first one, Alika. I used to have tibetan terriers who lived to a ripe old age and upon their demise - my life was awful! I felt so lonely - no reason to go walking again as I felt. However, one day several months later, I was having lunch with my sister when she tapped me on the arm and pointed. I turned to see what she was looking at and my heart melted!!

There, looking directly at me was this tiny, white ball of fluff with a shiny black nose and the biggest eyes I have ever seen on a little dog! However, the strange thing was that they looked exactly like the eyes of my beloved tibetan. Tears poured down my face and there followed the strangest of stories from that first encounter with a Coton de Tulear.

Needless to say I wanted to know what, where, how much etc etc and was horrified when I was told that a puppy would probably cost me around เธƒ1500-เธƒ2000!! They are, to this day, a rare breed in England and so command huge prices.

Undeterred (??) I wanted to know if there was a breeder anywhere near the area and was told that there was one about 20 minutes drive from my home - where this puppy had come from in fact.

No money - but that didn't stop me! I got on the 'phone and called that afternoon. In my mind I knew exactly what I wanted - small, white (ok that was a given!), female, not a puppy and with the right name - I am not a lover of dogs names being the same as human ones - I like them to be relevant to where they come from.

Anyway, as it happened (as it always does!), she had a family pet Coton, called Alika (perfect!) who she was looking to home as felt she needed to be the sole dog. Alika was 21 months old at that time. Could I wait to visit? No, I could not!

I found my way to the breeder's in the next couple of days - was ushered into a large room where there was a fabulous Italian bloodhound - which she also bred. I was informed that the dog would bark at me as it was very nervous and only responded to her - wrong!! I am very much a dog person and I think it actually horrified here when she came back into the room and the dog was sitting at my feet being stroked! Ho hum!

She brought Alika into the room eventually (I was sitting on pins by this time!) and as soon as Alika saw me she let out this enormous howl and rushed over to me - straight onto my lap. The breeder said that she had never heard the dog make that noise before and couldn't understand it (I did - it was the noise my tibetan made if I left him alone too long!)

Alika then promptly refused to go to her owner, would have nothing to do with her and stayed firmly on my lap. Then the rest of the family came in - about 10 of them altogether - and naturally wanted to say hello to me. Alika was having none of it!! 'She's mine! So she growled at them all until the moved off!!

Finally, to cut a long story short as I don't want to bore you - it was very obvious to the breeder that Alika was meant to be mine but she wanted to think about it - as they do! As I left Alika followed me to the door - crying. At home I then spent the next 4 nights sending mind messages to Alika - misbehave; be impossible, show you are miserable etc. Then I got the call - 'are you still interested in Alika?' Absolutely I said - she then told me how Alika had behaved once I was gone! Impossible, disobeyed everything, wouldn't eat, howled etc etc!! Great!

So she was obviously meant for me! Down I went to collect her and got the deal of a lifetime as a result of Alika not being right for anyone else - half the price with 4 months to spread the payments - and Alika and I went home and she didn't even give a backward glance!

After 4 years together - the bond is so intense between us - I felt that it needed to be lightened so I got a puppy. Careful to avoid showing Alika any less affection than usual -she has utterly accepted him and they are amazing together!

dog training classes in canton ct

dog training classes in canton ct ๏ปฟYou should start training your dog for agility while he is a puppy. But, it's possible to do it even if the dog is older. Getting your dog started with training should be done once you know if he isn't too old for it.

Knowing the age of the dog isn't enough to decide if he is too old. If he is still able to do it, the training age can vary from one breed to another. It depends on what his natural tendencies are, so there isn't one single age that you can use to decide on this matter.

But, even if older dogs can be trained, the process is much easier if the dog is still young. That's because he hasn't developed the habits and they aren't yet rooted in him.

If you do need to train an older dog, don't go into it thinking that he can't learn anything. Both the trainer and the dog should go into it fully committed. If the owner is patient enough and dedicated to agility training, the dog will learn much faster.

You can pick one of several methods to start the agility training. Some of them are presented below:

Physical exercise

Physical exercises should be the first things when starting agility training. If the trainer is interested in training the dog properly, age should be of no importance as long as the dog's condition is good. You can do some basic exercises with him, like hopping or jumping, to make him move a bit. If the dog is still a puppy, he can exercise much easier, because of the extra energy he has.

Allow him to play around

Just like you would teach a kid, if you make an exercise appear like a game, he's more likely to learn whatever you want to teach him. Puppies can generally go through chutes and tunnels, so you can easily introduce obstacles and tunnels into the exercise. You can turn the training area into a play ground where he can learn and have fun at the same time.

The puppy will be better prepared for agility training if you use this method to prepare him for what comes next.

Encourage his agility

If the training area is too small to put up obstacle courses, you can still use a number of different games to make him more agile. The training can be improved by using improvised walls and tunnels.

Keep it short

While dogs aren't as enthusiast as people about doing different activities, they do want to please their masters. You can't get them to continue the training if you don't give him a reason to like it. You can encourage him by giving him treats, patting him or praising, which should keep his attention to the exercise. Still, you shouldn't do very long training sessions.

One good rule to follow when you want to do agility training is not to do long lessons. It's better to keep them short. You can't teach him everything in only one lesson, so keep the training sessions short. This way he can understand everything without being overwhelmed with information. One tip is to finish each exercise with a praise, so always end it when he does something right.

It doesn't matter how young or old the dog is if the objective is agility training. It's all about how well he responds, if he wants to obey your commands or how willing he is to work on his own. It also matters if the trainer has enough patience with him.

The eggs hatch and the worms mature in the cecal area of the intestine where they can cause chronic bowel inflammation. How they are acquired Most common in adult animals especially those housed in groups or kennels because they can become infectious to other dogs after a few weeks in a warm environment. Harmful Effects to your dog The symptoms may include severe diarrhea, flatulence, loss of weight and general overall condition. Whipworms can cause chronic bowel inflammation.

Harmful Effects to Man Luckily, these parasites only adhere to our canine friends. Treatment Fenbendazole (Panacur) is usually prescribed after diagnosis. To regulate these parasites, give doses of milbemycin oxime every month, a heartworm preventive medication. Usually, large breeds of dogs are more prone to hip dysphasia. Labradors, Great Pyrenees, Great Danes, Retrievers, German Shepherds, Saint Bernards, Rottweilers and Sporting dog Breeds are examples. However, small dogs can also acquire this. If your dogs belong to any of the mentioned breeds, the following information might help you.

What is Hip Displasia? Hip Displasia, a degenerative condition, is an abnormality in the expansion of the hip joint, where the ball joint of the dogs hips are misshapen, caused by too much laxity in the joint. This in turn results to wear and tear of the abnormal arthritic bones causing extreme pain. Not only can this cause pain, the joint can also come right out of the socket.

How did my dog acquire this? Hip displasia is a genetic disease, meaning the pup can inherit it from its parents. Note that not all dogs inclined to get this disease will acquire it. Other factors also contribute, like environmental factors, rapid weight changes and other genetic factors as well. Tracing your pet's family lineage will help you determine if your dog is prone to this disease. If there is no incidence of hip displasia in your pet's family, then your dog will not get it.

What are its symptoms? It is difficult to diagnose because it may or may not show clinical signs. Common signs exhibited are lameness on one or both rear limbs, difficulty in standing or walking, hopping like a bunny, and decrease in mobility. After the joint's growth period, many pups display pain sporadically even before arthritis begins to exhibit. It can lead to severe arthritis, in which your pet can be in extreme pain. Rarely, puppies as young as 5 or 6 months can show these symptoms.

What is the treatment? If you suspect your dog has hip displasia, bring to the clinic and have your pet X-rayed. There are two methods to see if your dog has hip displasia - the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) testing uses a standard view and another developed by the University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program (PennHip), which shows to be more effective in detecting Hip Disphasia in puppies.

how to train your dog to heel

how to train your dog to heel ๏ปฟYou should start training your dog for agility while he is a puppy.

The skin: why your dog is itching

The skin is the largest organ of your pets' body and reflective of what is going on in the body. Regularly brush your pet looking for fleas, lice or ticks. The hair coat should be soft and shiny.

If you are seeing areas of excessive shedding in your pet then you may be dealing with certain skin conditions such as mange, ringworm, hypothyroid disease or allergies; treatments for these are discussed in detail in my book, Veterinary Secrets Revealed.

If your pet has areas of hair missing around the face that are not itchy, then he may have a type of mange called demodex. This small parasite shows up in pets with depressed immune systems.

One very safe effective treatment is Vitamin E given at 400IU per 40lbs once daily for 3-4 weeks.

If your pet has an excess of flaky skin (dandruff), then she may be in need of a essential fatty acid supplement. Flax is the best source for dogs at a dose of 1 teaspoon per cup of dog food. For cats use the liquid supplement (such as fish oil).

Take note of any palpable lumps or bumps.

Lipomas (benign fatty tumors) commonly occur on the chest wall. If your dog has a soft moveable lump on her chest, then it is probably a fatty tumor.

Sebaceous cysts are another common lump; they can often be distinguished by squeezing out a cheesy substance. They are also very soft. Lumps and bumps become more prevalent as your pet ages and their immune system weakens.

The most important thing in helping your pet is having them on a premium quality diet and supplementing with additional antioxidants. The ones I suggest using are Vitamin E, Vitamin C and specific flavonoids.

Any lumps that are firm, rapidly growing, not easily moveable should be considered serious and examined by your veterinarian.

Allergies are one of the most common reasons that I see pets. There are a huge number of allergens. The 3 main classes are Food, Fleas and Environmental. The most common signs are excessive scratching, paw and anal licking, hair shedding and excess dandruff.

If you suspect that your pet has an allergy, then the first 2 things that I suggest are to eliminate external parasites as a cause, and to feed a hypo-allergenic diet for 4-6 weeks (there are many available).

Some very helpful at home remedies that I often use are:

TO THE BATH. An oatmeal shampoo with cool water will ease the itchiest skin. Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes then rinse well. With the most severe allergies, bathe your pet twice weekly.

SOOTHE IT TOPICALLY. Calendula ointment is a herbal medication that has been successfully used to relieve the itch. Apply a thin coat twice daily to affected areas.

THE SUPPLEMENT CONNECTION. Fatty Acid supplements are very helpful in decreasing the level of inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids are most important. A great, inexpensive source is ground Flax Seeds; I give 1 tsp per cup of dog food. Cats are unable to metabolize Flax, so I only recommend the liquid supplement for them. Other sources include fish oil, primrose oil and specific veterinary supplements.

training dog collar shock ๏ปฟ“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself” says Josh Billings. Per the recent statistics revealed by American Pet Products Association in 2011-2012, more than 78.2 million US citizens own dog. But it is very difficult to make them follow your command. If you are training your dog when it is a puppy, you will get a well trained doggy. If not, the best and most effective way to get your dog to do things your way is by simply training them. Training your dog is really a simple task, if you have the proper knowledge and strategies about how to train a dog.

Training your dog is the basic ways to make your dog well behaved, responsive, and friendly. I hope that you might be eager to know about how to train your dog. If so, let us start your dog training journey!

First and foremost start your training with the help of a good training program. If you don’t have a clue how to begin training your dog, you should get help from a dog trainer. There are at least two different options for training. The first is to train your dog through an actual trainer and the second is to train your dog with the help of a dog training program book or video. When comparing, both can have the same result, but you need to choose the one which is best for you and your dog. dog training depends on both personalities. If you have a dog like an American Eskimo or German shepherd, take it to the trainer or you might end up having the canine train you!

If you are training the dog, plan accordingly to hit the target. To get an idea about the plan, you can review the whole agenda provided by a live trainer or proposed in a dog training video. For example, set a goal to teach your dog one trick for the whole week which grows your canine obedience and skills. Try to note down the time allotted for the training session for your dog and number of times you train your dog. After a few weeks, hopefully you will see reasonable changes in your dog’s behavior.

Make sure that your training does not make your dog feel threatened, frustrated or trapped. During the entire training session, your dog should be having fun and feeling loved so that it wants to please you. Before starting the training for your dog, review your dog’s diet. Just as humans do, your pet will also feel lazy and lethargic after eating junk food. So it’s better to offer them a moderate and healthy diet which gives more energy and supports concentration required to learn what you’re teaching it in training.

I sure hope that now have a good idea about how to start the training sessions for your dog. Train it effectively and you will have a pet which follows your commands.
