crate training dogs puppy

crate training dogs puppy ๏ปฟPomeranian dogs are what you are looking for if in case you want a small lap dog as a pet. Generally, this breed of dog have a bright personality and easy to get along with. However, they can be temperamental, commanding, and outgoing. That is why it is discouraged to have them with very young children in a house. They can snap when they are teased. On the other hand, Poms are affectionate, gentle, and loyal. Pomeranian dogs are ideal for pet lovers who live in a small house or apartment. But they can also adapt well in a wider area.

This breed is perfect for dog owners who have a small yard. Outdoor activities are okay for Poms. They may be lap dogs but do not hesitate in letting them get a good exercise. Pomeranian dogs can actually endure taking long walks since they belong to an active breed. It is easy to teach them with tricks as long as you are patient and determined enough. Looking after Pomeranian dogs requires ample time and attention from you. Their grooming requirements are quite complicated since they have two coats of fur that need special grooming. Poms have a short, fluffy undercoat and a straight topcoat.

Their coat needs to be brushed at least once a week but not too frequent because it can be damaging. In addition, Pomeranian dogs need a good dental care because they are prone to loss. That is why it is highly recommended that Poms eat dry food to help keep their teeth and gums healthy. Another distinct characteristic of Poms is that they give high value to their personal properties like food, toys, or beds. They do not want their properties to be shared with other dogs or pets. Despite of this high sense of ownership, Pomeranians are not quarrelsome dogs.

It is recommended that Pomeranian dogs be trained as early as possible. In particular, they can bark relentlessly if their barking is not controlled. They are headstrong little dogs and can become rowdy if not properly trained or disciplined. By having them trained, you can set out rules for them to follow. Your Pomeranian will show its love and appreciation to you after you have trained it well. Remember that they will not learn proper discipline if they won’t be trained. Poms are said to be quite difficult to housebreak, but if you remain consistent in training them, they will eventually learn proper potty training.

This breed of dog is especially independent and they don’t cling to their handlers. However, it is important that the owner is firm when he disciplines or deals with a Pomeranian. Otherwise, his dog will not listen or obey his commands. If not properly contained, Poms can be very demanding. Pomeranian dogs are ideal for people who desire to take care of small dogs. Poms are considered to be kind hearted pets that can easily adapt in your household. Poms are excellent little dogs. They may be fox-like in appearance but they are affectionate. If you are thinking of owning a dog, just make sure that you familiarize your self with all the information about the dog breed.

It will help you know what are to expect from your chosen breed.

jobs working with dogs in california ๏ปฟFor families welcoming new pets over the holidays, 2009 could mean a host of puppy behaviors that come back to "bite" the owners. California dog trainers Steve Bettcher and Patrick Gibbons, known as The dog Squad, advise pet owners to start off on the right foot with their new puppy training through early intervention. The two have announced a Puppy Preschool, starting January 19, that guides pet parents toward well behaved dogs and a better relationship with their pets.

The dog Squad's four-week course begins Jan. 19, 2008, at the Redwood Animal Hospital in Castro Valley, Calif., and addresses a number of topics vital to good puppy training: biting, the puppy's place in the "pack," appropriate behavior around people and other dogs and crate training. A dog owner who desires effective and gentle advice on puppy training should enjoy the methodologies employed by the team, explains Bettcher.

"We teach pet owners how to train their puppies and dogs using a humane approach to dog obedience training," says Steve Bettcher, President of The dog Squad. "This approach teaches the owner how to communicate effectively with their pet, so that their dog understands clearly what they want and expect."

Puppy Preschool participants learn how to set structure and rules that help puppies understand their place in the pack, proper behavior and manners. Pets are given the chance at each class meeting to socialize with other dogs and people, and offered opportunities to become comfortable in a variety of social settings.

"Our dog training programs produces dogs that listen better and respond to their owners even when distracted in real world situations," explains Patrick Gibbons, Director of Training.

Through training and socialization the San Francisco, California dog trainers solve typical difficulties with dog behavior - toy aggression, dog dominance aggression, problems with crate training dogs, and puppy chewing to name a few. The team uses a combination of lecture and hands-on experience to teach owners basic dog commands and other valuable skills, ranging from leash training puppy to how to stop a dog from barking.

The dog Squad doesn't stop at new puppy training; dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes and temperaments benefit from obedience training throughout the year. For example, for the owner of a Saint Bernard or Great Dane, obedience training is not only essential for a good dog-owning experience, but can solve obvious safety issues.

Pet parents can get advice on new puppy training and adult dog obedience in a series of free articles on The dog Squad's Web site, as well as read true stories about other pet owners and how their lives have improved through training.

For free training articles and information about the upcoming Puppy Preschool, call 510-582-DOGS or visit The dog Squad at dogSquad.biz.

One of the most beloved, old and elite breed of dog in our world today are the bulldogs. This breed of dog is used as a symbol of England since the 1500's because it symbolizes being stoic, courageous and bullheaded. That is why when train your bulldog, it can be difficult because they are a stubborn breed.

Choosing the Right Puppy For You

If you decide to have a bulldog puppy, you have to remember some few things about this breed of dog. Bulldogs can have many health problems and it starts from its birth because of their high mortality rate. What you do is you can choose a puppy that is at least eight weeks old, it's not aggressive and can be very friendly. You can have it check it with a veterinary if it is in good health because there are many health problems some puppy bulldogs may have, especially on its nose and ears area.

You can start to train your bulldog puppy as soon as you get home but make sure that your dog is old enough and it has been socialized properly. It can create a lot of aggressive behavior when your puppy is not socialized with other people or dogs.

Training Your Bulldog Puppy Training

You can start your bulldog puppy with some basic house training. Your bulldog can be stubborn when it is young so it is important that you use crate training and you are always at home for their house breaking. Don't expect rapid results when potty training, potty training a bulldog, like with any other dog, it will take patience and practice.

Now that you have established basic training with your puppy, you need to show your puppy that you are the alpha pack leader in your home. You can train your puppy not to bite or nip by making a clear whining sound when they do and disconnect all play instantly for a couple minutes. This will help them connect biting or nipping with undesirable results, like playtime is over. Don’t let your puppy jump on your couch and don’t let them sleep in your bed. Use the crate as much as possible when your puppy is young.

The training of your bulldog puppy should move into the obedience phase when it reaches 3 and 6 months and you should focus on basic commands such as lying down, staying, sitting and other types of basics commands.

At first, your bulldog may not follow these commands because of its strong nature but in the end they will pick it up these cues if you are consistent.

You can Use Bulldog Puppy Training to For Their Own Safety

Bulldogs are naturally curious and courageous breeds of dogs so it will try to explore its surroundings as much as possible. You can teach them commands so that they will not chase cars, or run away from you when you are out in public. Do not take off their leash until you are sure your puppy will come back to you when called. Remember that there are higher risks with bulldogs than any other smaller breeds.

It can be tough at first when you train your bulldog puppy but eventually this breed of dog will show its true nature, a loyal and attentive companion. They will be stubborn at times but will stay at your side, follow your instruction and less maintenance. That is why it is important that you train them early so that they can follow your instructions in the future.

crate training dogs crying tears

crate training dogs crying tears ๏ปฟDo you want to teach your dog to ‘Sit’/’Stand’/’Down’ when you are 20 feet or further away from your dog?

There is a difference between asking a dog to ‘down’ when you are standing next to it or having it ‘stay’, then walking away, waiting for ten seconds and then walking back to deliver a treat – and accomplishing these same behaviors when you are 20 feet away from your dog and asking them to ‘sit’ if they are standing, ‘stand’ if they are sitting or going into a down position if they are sitting or standing.

Most obedience training cues are given when the owner is next to the dog with the exception of the recall cue. Historically most of the dog training disciplines that use distance commands such as field trials have used shock collars to get the results they want. The premise of this learning is that the dog is told to do something at a distance and if they ignore the cue then the owner/handler applies an electric shock. The dog learns to do the behavior to escape or avoid an unpleasant if not painful stimulus.

There are far more pleasant ways to teach distance obedience behaviors. Last Saturday, at The dogSmith Training Center, in one 10 minute session two German Shepherds being handled by their owners had their dogs sitting and ‘downing’ with no food lures when they were 6 feet away from their dogs. Although the duration of the behavior was very short it did show that with guidance and a systematic approach most pet dog owners can effectively and efficiently teach their pet dogs a high level of distance obedience. The duration can be added later.

The behavior was built one step at a time. As the dogs became familiar with the rules of the game and understood that great reinforcement was available to them for getting “it right” their learning became faster and faster .

When starting this training with a pet dog with the goal of the dog sitting or ‘downing’ or standing from a distance, the first behavior criteria on the ladder must be 97% reliable. The dog must already be able to demonstrate the behavior without a food lure when the owner is standing by their side or in front of them. The behavior should be under the control of both a verbal and physical cue, not the physical cue created by the lure mechanics but the final finished product cue.

Example:

Goal - To have your dog go into a ‘down’ position when you are 20 feet away using a verbal cue ‘down’ or a simple hand signal for ’down’

The first behavior criteria is built on the premise that the dog will already respond to a verbal “down” and a simple hand cue “down” when the owner is in an upright position. This behavior should also have a built in duration of 30 seconds and be on a release cue of “okay”. The owner should not have to lure the dog down with food in their hand or use their entire body as a prompt to motivate the dog into a ‘down’ position. The dog should be comfortable sitting for duration of 30 seconds on an interval schedule of reinforcement no more than every 10 seconds.

Step 1

Take half a step away from the dog and ask the dog to ‘down’ using both the hand signal and the verbal signal.

As soon as the dog goes ‘down’ Click or say ‘Yes’ and step back to the dog and deliver reinforcement. The dog should not have the time to get up and break the behavior. The reinforcement should be delivered to the dog in the ‘down’ position.

Repeat Step 1, 5 times

The dog should be successful on all five occasions. If they are not, then the likelihood is that the initial behavior criterion is not in place. Since the dog will already respond to a verbal “down” and a simple hand cue “down” when the owner is in an upright position the owner should not have to lure the dog down with food in their hand or use their entire body as a prompt. The dog should be comfortable sitting for duration of 30 seconds on an interval schedule of reinforcement no less than every 10 seconds.

Step 2

Take a full step away from the dog and ask the dog to ‘down’ using both the hand signal and the verbal signal.

As soon as the dog goes ‘down’ Click or say ‘Yes’ and step back to the dog and deliver reinforcement. The dog should not have the time to get up and break the behavior. The reinforcement should be delivered to the dog in the ‘down’ position.

Repeat this 5 times

Step 3

Take 2 full steps away from the dog and ask the dog to ‘down’ using both the hand signal and the verbal signal.

As soon as the dog goes down Click or say ‘Yes’ and step back to the dog and deliver reinforcement. The dog should not have the time to get up and break the behavior. The reinforcement should be delivered to the dog in the down position.

Repeat this 5 times. Do not progress from this stage until you have 5 correct behaviors out of 5 attempts. This is the important step and may prove to be the most difficult step to get past. A couple of things may happen.

1. The dog may be confused, you have now moved further away than ever before. This is a new behavior for the dog. The dog may try to get closer to you back into the normal position the dog is in when being asked to ‘down.’

2. At this stage you may have to reintroduce a more exaggerated physical cue to encourage the dog to go ‘down.’ Start off by just bending at the waist and using your hand to help motivate the dog into a ‘down’ position. This prompt can be faded later on.

3. If you have to use a full physical cue, your body bending over and knees bending over to get the dog to drop into the ‘down,’ the dog may pop forward thinking there is food in your hand. Be persistent, the dog will “get it.” Use a happy upbeat voice to encourage the dog into position.

4. If you cannot stop the dog coming towards you then go back and find a middle criteria Such as one and a half steps away from the dog.

When you are comfortably moving back a step at a time, doing sets of five behaviors at each step, you should work on fading all the prompts that you had to reintroduce at Step 3 when you reach a distance from your dog of 6 steps.

You will have to repeat this criterion for each new distance behavior you teach. When you have some solid distance behaviors for ‘sit’/’down’ and ‘stand’ then you can work on having the dog switch between behaviors with you at a distance. Do not expect that if you can have your dog ‘down’ from ten feet reliably that you will then at ten feet be able to put the dog back into a ‘sit’ from a ‘down.’ You will have to reduce your distance from your dog to develop this behavior.

crate training for dogs puppy training

crate training for dogs puppy training ๏ปฟAnytime a dog is acting aggressive; there is a reason for it. Aggression in dogs happens because of genetics, environment and training methods. There is always a trigger for aggressive behavior. One of the first steps a professional dog trainer or behaviorist will do when dealing with an aggressive dog is find out what is triggering the aggression. There can be many reasons for this. Treating aggression consists of four steps. The first step is getting a through vet check. We need to rule out any physical problems before we can start any behavior program. The second step consists of safety and management. The third and step involves developing a positive relationship and structure. And the last step deals with treating and changing the dog’s aggressive response. In order for the program to be effective each part of the program must be followed.

1. Aggression is often described as a snowball going downhill. It starts very small and insignificant and quickly becomes huge and intimidating. It is very important that we try to limit the number of aggressive incidents that occur. Limit access to anything that triggers the aggression. Some other important points to remember are:

Walk the dog on a gentle leader

Muzzle before vets, groomers, etc.

Keep the dog kenneled or in a crate when unsupervised

Try to walk the dog in areas or at times when you are unlikely to come into contact with other dogs.

Remember good management skills are very important for any dog owner, but it is especially important for owners with aggressive dogs.

2. Positive relationship and structure: A dog is a pack animal, which is one reason they make such good pets because they respond to a social structure. In the wild, the pack is very loosely organized, but there is always a pack leader. In order for the pack to survive there needs to be structure. A dog living in a domestic situation needs to understand that its human pack members are at the top of the social scale. We need to be strong leaders in the dog’s eyes; otherwise the dog will develop unwanted behaviors. A dog does not have to be physically punished in order to learn that we are the pack leaders. A more desirable way to establish our position is to control what is important to the dog.

Games

Eating

Grooming

Social contact

Obedience

As you structure the relationship, it is also important to provide your dog with some mental and physical stimulation. A dog needs exercise and a change of scenery once in a while (walks at the beach, in the woods, going to parks are all good and necessary things for your dog.) Another good thing to do for your dog is to put him on a quality diet. Nutrition has a direct effect on your dog’s behavior.

3. Treating the aggression: Treating the aggression is a gradual process and should be done with a professional trainer. The aggressive response needs to be dealt with. Using harsh physical methods to deal with aggression can backfire. Putting a choke collar and trying to “correct” the aggressive behavior with a leash correction can make the behavior worse.

Conclusion

If your dog is showing signs of aggressive behavior please contact an experienced professional dog trainer or behaviorist. Aggressive behavior can be very dangerous and needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

crate training dogs pros and cons ๏ปฟHow To Teach Your dog To Yawn On Command

One of the easiest dog trick that you can train your dog to do is to teach your dog to yawn on command. This trick can be taught to any dog of any size or breed and by anyone, and by anyone I mean children and adults.

What you are going to need before training this trick is treats. You can also use something that your dog likes, like a favorite toy or praise, depending on how your dog responds. For simplicity, I will use treats in my article but you are welcome to substitute it with whatever works with your dog.

Place your treat nearby, preferably somewhere near that you can access easily. What I do is I put my treats on the table by my couch, in a little jar so that I can access it very easily and without having to open a bag to get to them.

When your dog goes for a nap or is sleeping nearby, watch closely and wait until he wakes up. Once your dog wakes up he will most likely yawn. This is the perfect opportunity to reward your dog for yawning since that is the behavior that we want to reinforce. All you have to do during this time is to say the word "Yes!" at the same time that your dog yawns and immediately give him a treat after.

Your timing has to be very precise in order for your dog to learn to yawn. If you do this several times a day for a week you'll notice that your dog will actually start yawning on his own without even being tired just so that he can get a treat. Once that happens, it is a golden opportunity to associate the command "Are you tired" with the behavior of yawning.

Once you see your dog yawning, say your command "Are you tired" and immediately give him a treat. It should take about a week to fully condition your dog to yawn on command. Obviously this is relevant to the amount of times that you train per day or if your timing is perfect, but in an average you should expect to have a fully trained trick like this in two weeks time.

Now that your dog has learned to yawn on command, you might want to show it off a little bit to your friends and family. The best way to do this is to actually do it with several other tricks so that it looks more like a performance. For example, you could ask your dog to shake his paw, roll over, turn around, give you a high five ... and finish with "are you tired" from all of these tricks, which your dog will inevitably yawn in approval.

Well there you go, this is an extremely easy trick to train your dog and I encourage you to train as many tricks as you can since training is one of the best ways to build the relationship with your dog and to connect with him. Have fun!

crate training for dogs with separation anxiety

crate training for dogs with separation anxiety ๏ปฟThe Border terrier got its name from the area called Cheviot Hills, which is actually near the border of England and Scotland. This is where these dogs were made to attack and terminate predatory foxes.

They have wiry coat that is why they normally appear as scruffy. However, this scruffiness is an attention-grabber that is why owners do not forget to hug their little ball of energy.

The following are some of the basic facts breeders would really love to know about Borders:

Category: Terrier

Living Environment: indoors (highly recommended); outdoors (fenced yard)

Coat: wiry and short; double coated

Colors: tan, red, grizzle and tan, and/or blue and tan

Height: between 11 and 16 inches

Weight: between 11 and 16 pounds

Temperament:

Naturally,

• they are scruffy, hard and bold hunters

• they are active as puppies but mellow down as they mature

• they are not friendly with rabbits, rats, hamsters, and even birds

• they are economical to feed

• their activity die down when left alone all day as they really love to please people especially their owners

When properly trained,

• they can get along with the household cats but not with cats in the neighborhood

• they may even catch a burglar

• they may lose timidity when accustomed to active environments

Breeders should note of the following health issues:

• Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome or CES, also called as "Spike's disease", which is a hereditary, neurological, metabolic and muscle disorder that is sometimes confused with canine epilepsy

• Cataract, or loss of transparency of one or both lenses of the eyes

• Cryptorchidism, wherein testicles do not descend into the scrotum

• Deafness

• Skin problems and a few skin allergies

Care and Exercise:

• Their coat needs weekly brushing.

• They should be professionally groomed at least twice a year.

• They should bathe only when necessary since they shed little to no hair. Their physique requires a regular exercise routine which includes a daily play time while on leash.

• They should be on leash while walking in public places because of their hunting instincts.

Origin/History:

The exact origins of Border terriers are obscure but many breeders accepted the story that the variety was developed in the Cheviot Hills area, which is near the border of Scotland and England. The Borders have been used as hunters of rabbits and hares. They can even keep up with running horses with their short yet sturdy legs. They were also used by farmers to lure predatory foxes into their dens before killing them.

They were also trained to hunt otters, marten, and even fierce badgers. Like most terriers that were once molded as hunters, they also evolved as pets and became lovely, friendly, and loyal companion dogs. They also take part in dog shows and they can easily grab their audience attention with their agility, appearance, and bright disposition.

The breed was registered by the British Kennel Club in 1920 and by the American Club ten years after.

At present, Borders are highly favored as companion dogs and pets due to their adaptability, friendliness, and winning personality. Nonetheless, they can be reliable when it comes to tracking down vermin. In fact, some of their esteemed talents include hunting, guarding the family, and performing tricks and sports that require competitive obedience.

Like most terriers, you can be rest assured to have a loyal and bright companion dogs if you give your attention and affection to a Border. You can be sure that they can definitely drive away your bore!

crate training dogs ๏ปฟAccording to an article released by CBS News called “Fake Service dogs a Growing Problem,” real service dogs help assist a wide variety of individuals, including “people who use power or manual wheelchairs, have balance issues, have various types of autism, need seizure alert or response, need to be alerted to other medical issues like low blood sugar, or have psychiatric disabilities”. Obviously, service dogs help positively affect a massive amount of disabled individuals. What could go wrong?

Fake service dogs, that’s what. CBS News released a shocking report back in December that followed the rising number of “fake” service dogs that were available over the Internet. Actually, more specifically, the “legal” documents, tags, and vests were available to anyone over the Internet, which means any dog can be disguised as a service dog.

But why would the general public spring for such deceit? Having a service dog provides lots of public perks. For example, people with service dogs can cut the line at airports. Or these dogs are allowed in movie theatres, so regular dog owners now have a loophole in which to watch new movie releases with their pooch.

“Just like anyone who breaks the rules. It ruins it for the legitimate needs of people who need their dogs,” says said Anne-Marie Karash, an associate director of the Humane Society of New York. Which is quite unfortunate, seeing as though there is a particularly large demand for service dogs among civilians. However, such complications in medicinal canine acquisition also affects the growing number of combat veterans returning home from war. Service dogs have been proven to help soldiers rehabilitate from mental illnesses like PTSD, and physically aide those who have been through significant physical trauma that perhaps required limb amputation or the need for a wheelchair.

The U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs reports that one in five combat veterans develops Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, either during or shortly after combat. The Mayo Clinic defines PTSD as having three main categories of symptoms: “re-experiencing symptoms,” “avoidance symptoms,” and “hyperarousal symptoms”. These categories can be simplified to describe symptoms of flashbacks and nightmares, feeling of guilt and depression, and insomnia, respectively. With this new insurgence of service dog fraud, however, all of these veterans who are affected by PTSD and other ailments are going to have a more difficult time using legitimate service dogs to maintain their previous standard of living, since businesses and other establishments are becoming more aware of fraudulent dogs and are therefore mistrusting the whole service-dog system.

Where can one find legitimate service dogs? To be honest, it takes some hunting through different resources, whether it be with the help of online search engines to help pinpoint the available organizations who support legitimate service dogs, to smaller print announcements perhaps around one’s neighborhood. Some organizations personally train their service dogs, while others simply teach an individual how to train their dog to become a legitimate service dog. While the latter appears to contribute to the problem of the influx of fake service dogs, Brian Sabatino, a dog trainer, insists that there is one surefire way to tell the difference between a legitimate and fraudulent service dog: “They didn’t go through the training...anything could set them off.”

The VA used to be an excellent resource for distributing and training serviced dogs for veterans, but with the recent scandals regarding the VA and its frequent inadequate care, veterans are advised to seek contact other organizations elsewhere with their inquiries regarding service dogs.

One of those organizations is Operation: I.V, a 501(c)3 non-profit founded in 2012 that helps combat veterans heal from both PTSD as well as traumatic brain injuries. Its founder, Roxann Abrams, is a Gold Star Mother who lost her son SFC Randy Abrams in 2009. Randy took his own life after experiencing a PTSD flashback from his service in Iraq. Randy had undiagnosed PTSD- a common occurrence among combat veterans either due to mistakes made by the medical field or simply the individual’s failure to report such grave symptoms.

As a result of her son’s death, Abrams founded Operation: I.V. so that combat veterans who served in either Iraq or Afghanistan have a place to receive treatment through a specialized “VIP”, or “Veteran Intervention Plan” program. “VIP” offers ten different rehabilitation programs, including hyperbolic oxygen therapy, service dogs, and anxiety reduction therapy. Additionally, veterans may also partake in programs such as job retraining, business mentoring, and educational assistance. Again, while there is no cure for PTSD, the programs provided by Operation: I.V. can drastically improve a veteran’s mental health and overall outlook on life.

crate training dogs crying youtube ๏ปฟAre you looking to get a new German shepherd? A puppy, or adopted dog? Are you wondering if it is better to get a male or a female dog? Well, according to the professionals, both are equally wonderful choices. Neither is better than the other. They do have certain attributes that are gender related though. German shepherds regardless of male or female are very loyal, willing to be trained, and, they make great family pets. And, even though German shepherds are great "guard" dogs, they are not of an aggressive nature. But, there are still differences between the two.

The male dog is usually stronger, and bigger in structure, more masculine. This means he will be looking a bit more intimidating than its female counterpart. A mature male Shepherd can easily outweigh a female by as much as 30 pounds. And, 30 pounds on a dog is a lot of structure. A male dog may be a little harder to handle, although, again, if trained properly will be a worthy addition to your family.

Male dogs can be more protective and more territorial than a female. They will do what all male dogs do, mark their territory and this could also be an issue, depending on the family home grounds. Female German shepherds can be more protective of their families. This could make them jealous of other pets in the household, especially of a relationship between you and the other pets. That is why; training your dog is of top priority.

Female German shepherds will be a little more streamlined, more feminine. This becomes quite noticeable. Actually, this difference is very noticeable even from a distance. So if the look of your shepherd in that way makes a difference to you, then yes, you may want to gender pick your new dog.

If you do not use your dog for breeding it should be neutered, for its sake and your sake. Neutered dogs are easier to handle, and have less problems connected to their gender. Male dogs are very difficult to handle when on the trail of a dog in heat. And, a dog in heat comes with its own problems of messiness, moodiness and other dogs hanging around. Neutering is best if your dog will be a family pet only.

What gender you get, doesn't really matter in the long run as long as you are ready and willing to train your dog. An untrained unmanageable German shepherd can actually be a dangerous animal. Even if not aggressive, these dogs are very strong, and they can hurt someone by their sheer strength alone.

If you are adopting, which I pray you do, then you may not have a choice. But, on the other hand, you will get the dog of your heart.

crate training for dogs treat pouches

crate training for dogs treat pouches ๏ปฟBreedism is a word coined by dog owners to define breed discrimination. Some people feel that breedism is to dogs what racism is to people. Victoria Stilwell on her “Positively” blog brought up the case of Lennox, a dog that was confiscated by the authorities in Belfast, Ireland simply because he looked like a “Pit Bull” type. (Lennox is a Labrador/Pit Bull mix). This breed has been classified as dangerous regardless of the dog’s temperament, behavioral history or owner’s actions.

In the United States, Denver, Colorado in Sec. 8-55 of the Municipal Code, rules that any dog owner who refuses to surrender their dog will face up to a year in jail and a $999 fine. According to the website DenverKillsdogs, this ordinance also bans shelters and humane societies from harboring pit bulls and even goes so far as to forbid any US resident from transporting a Pit Bull though Denver without a permit.

More than 1800 Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes have been euthanized (executed may be the more appropriate term) between 2005 and 2008. The shelters outside of Denver have become overburdened and overcrowded as a result of Denver’s breed ban.

dog Whisperer Cesar Milan features well-behaved Pit Bulls on his television show that proves they are not all dangerous, nor are they predisposed to be dangerous. There are so many false media reports and stereotypes out there against the Pit Bull and so many are euthanized every day due to being born a Pit Bull. Where are the stories about the Pit Bulls slathering people with kisses?

Breed specific legislation doesn’t work. Politicians, to solve a problem created by irresponsible dog owners, created this legislation. Some feel that it is similar to the policies that Nazi Germany instigated during the 1930’s and 40’s. Counties, cities and entire countries around the world continue to turn to BSL policies in a desperate attempt to protect their public from the rising number of serious and sometimes-fatal dog bites. Instead, we need to educate the owners and make them responsible for their dogs. The breed itself is not responsible for being aggressive or mean. dogs as weapons in gangs around London and other cities is becoming a real problem and a source of a significant part of the media-reported dog attacks.

According to Victoria Stilwell, one of the most commonly found attributes among aggressive dogs is not their breed, but rather a lack of confidence and insecurity. She points out that the typical schoolyard bully suffers from significant insecurity issues and this same concept can be applied to dogs.

In recent scientific studies, the family Dachshund was named the “most aggressive.”

A dog is what you make of it. Small dogs are much more likely to bite than large dogs. German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Malamutes, Doberman Pinschers, Chow Chows, Great Danes and Saint Bernards have also been cited in fatal dog attacks yet they are not being singled out.

All training can be done in a positive and fun manner rather than exerting dominance over an already insecure dog. These dogs need be taught to be more self-confident. The American Veterinary Medical Association states that there is little scientific evidence to support the claims of the media that certain breeds of dog are more likely to bite. They offer valuable instruction on how to prevent dog bites without reference to their breed.

As dog behaviorists are getting their degrees and continuing their education, we now know so much more than we did even 20 years ago about how dogs think, what they feel, how their brains are wired and what could potentially cause them to aggress. dogs look to us for guidance on how to act in our world, yet time after time, we are failing our dogs.

All dogs deserve a second chance. Shelter dogs are other people’s mistakes or rejects. Such mistakes have always included the non-socializing of these dogs during their formative months of puppyhood, which can be the worst mistake of all!

Tara Choules from Ireland has a dog training company that is anti-breed specific legislation. She feels that all dogs can learn and all dogs need a safe and secure environment. No choke chains, prong collars, electric collars or force is needed. Science shows us this and any breed, no matter how strong, can be trained using positive reinforcement and ethical humane training methods.

Tara is conducting a breed behavior study using a Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) to gather behavioral data on breed-related aggression. Tara invites dog owners to participate in this study on her Facebook page of BreedBehaviourStudy. The restricted breeds in Ireland include American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, English Bull Terrier, German Shepherd (Alsatian), Japanese Akita, Japanese Tosa, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bandog as well as other strains and cross-breeds of these dogs.

We are all aware of racism but unless you have a breed that has been affected by this distrust, then you may not be aware of the effect breedism may have on your selected breed. Stay connected with legislators so that your breed may be protected from media sensation that creates Breed Specific Legislation. The National Canine Research Council is preserving the human-canine bond by documenting that breed bans do not protect the public!

service dog training programs california lvn

service dog training programs california lvn ๏ปฟYou've tried putting him outside, you've tried putting mats down, you've tried walking him round the block, but whatever you do, your new little dog keeps going on the carpet. Does this sound familiar? It's surprising how many dog owners want to know the answer to this simple problem, but no matter how hard you look it never seems to be enough.

You have to remember that having a new dog is a bit like bringing home a baby; neither of them know at first what they are supposed to do - you have to teach them. You also wouldn't leave a small child at home by themselves, yet people bring home a puppy and expect her to stay at home all day and not leave you an unpleasant surprise - and it's unreasonable to expect it.

The good news is, there are 7 simple steps you can take which will help you house train your dog in no time.

Firstly, in the early weeks of your puppy's life, either you or someone else should be around to look after her. This doesn't mean 24/7 but a member of your family should there for a good part of the day.

Routine and repetition is vital, so try and feed him at roughly the same times each day. Carefully monitor their eating habits; most newly arrived dogs need feeding between two and four times a day at first depending on what type of dog you have.

Identify an area where you think it is best for them to do their business and take them there as soon as they have finished eating their food. Try and remember to do this as soon as you get up in the morning as, like you, might be desperate to go after being shut in all night. You can put a leash on them if you want to as this will also get them used to that and, depending on the breed, will ensure you get them to the right place. Not everyone has a back yard or garden but it's really important to keep doing the same thing. Make sure at first that you do this every hour or so.

Decide on a command that you will use each time you take them out, make sure everyone who takes him, uses the same word. This can be whatever you like as long as you say the same thing each time.

Have an area which is designated as his; a pen of some sort is fine and put bedding and toys in it. If he hasn't gone when you've put him outside, put him straight back in his bed when you come in. dogs are really clean animals and will rarely soil their bedding but they might do it just next to it if that's possible.

If you see them peeing or about to, say something like ah, ah and put them outside straight away preferably in the appointed place (see point three above). Immediately clean up and disinfect the affectedsoiled area. On no account hit, shout, or worse of all, rub their noses in it.

Finally, all dogs love attention, so really go mad and show him how pleased you are; pet him, use encouraging language, give him a small treat so that he knows he's done well and he will want to continue to please you. Don't overdo this though as you don't want them to associate going to the toilet with treats.

how much does a dog trainer maker toolkitsonline

how much does a dog trainer maker toolkitsonline ๏ปฟBuying an English Springer Spaniel puppy is the first step towards fun and companionship with these wonderful animals. It is important to get it right and these tips will help you do that. Some say "let the puppy choose you". That is all right up to a point, but you still want to be sure that the puppy is in good shape for the breed.

If you have done all the preliminary checks on the pup - parents' pedigree, prize winners in last two generations and so on then we come to the finer points.

A pup is by definition very young, so we will not know how it will grow, and therefore have to rely on the look of the parents. The things we can check on the mother (and maybe the father too if he is around) without being judging experts are:

1. From the side, is the body basically square - height equal to length is good?

2. The forelegs - does the mother stand with pigeon toes or with paws splayed, or ideally paws straight ahead?

3. Are the hindquarters muscular and strong looking and are the rear paws pointing forward? The rear legs should have a moderate rake back, and should not be vertical or raked too much.

4. The base of the tail should run parallel with the dog's back and not rise above it.

5. The paws should look like a continuation of the legs and the toes should not be splayed (which can lead to injury).

6. The coat should be glossy and healthy looking, and not coarse or curly.

7. In addition to the basic liver and white or black and white coloring, some tan markings are acceptable, but only on the eyebrows, on the cheeks, inside the ears, under the tail, and sparely on the lower legs. Blue roan is an acceptable color in the US.

If the mother checks out ok in these respects, and has a good natural gait with the legs swinging straight forward then that should all be a good indicator for her pups.

On the pup, the minimum checks should be as follows:

1. A liver coloring should be rich and dark.

2. A wavy coat in a pup is not a good sign for an adult show dog - check the coat behind the head and down the neck and back. Showing may not be important to you but a wavy coat will require more grooming.

3. Deep blue eyes which are not running or weeping (deeper color now means a deeper hazel color in maturity).

4. A cold wet nose with no pink patches.

5. A coat which is smooth and glossy.

6. Check the teeth for correct bite - upper teeth have a close overlap on the lower teeth and the jaw is set square.

7. Check the testicles to see that they are both descended (this would be by 6-8 week of age).

The puppy should not appear too thin or too fat. A big tummy could point to worms.

These checks are generic, and if you are serious about winning prizes with your English Springer Spaniel then you should check the Breed Standard in more depth for your particular country, as Breed Standards are not totally consistent internationally.

The above checklist does not cover everything, but will give a good general indication of the pup's likely development. If you do have any doubts then you could get a veterinarian's report.
